Three new trains for the Mont-Blanc Express
02 / 07 / 2026
The Mont-Blanc Express is continuing its modernisation with the arrival of three new Stadler Z890 trainsets. Named “Le Rhône”, “Le Trient” and “Le Triège”, they will enter commercial service from 22 June 2026 on the Swiss section of the line.
The Mont-Blanc Express is taking another important step in its history. Transports de Martigny et Régions — TMR — has officially presented three new Stadler Z890 trainsets, designed to improve comfort, accessibility and transport capacity on this iconic railway line linking Switzerland and France through the Alps.
Held in Vernayaz as part of a special event day, the naming ceremony for these new trainsets marks the beginning of a new phase in the development of the Mont-Blanc Express. They are scheduled to enter commercial service from 22 June 2026 on the Swiss section of the line.
Three names inspired by the region
In keeping with the Swiss railway tradition of naming trains, the three new trainsets have been given names closely linked to the region’s natural heritage: Le Rhône, Le Trient and Le Triège.
These names pay tribute to the waterways that shape the landscape and identity of the region. Le Rhône symbolises the great Alpine artery, connecting territories and opening up horizons. Le Trient, born from the glacier of the same name, evokes the energy of the valley and the force of the elements. More intimate in character, Le Triège reflects proximity, authenticity and the precious connection with nature.
Through these names, TMR reaffirms its attachment to the regional identity and natural heritage that make the Mont-Blanc Express so unique.
A modernised travel experience
The new Stadler Z890 trainsets have been designed to improve the experience of passengers. They offer increased comfort, optimised spaces, easier accessibility, greater transport capacity and modernised passenger information systems.
These improvements meet today’s mobility standards and help make rail travel even more enjoyable in the heart of the Alpine landscapes.
A historic line looking to the future
For more than 120 years, the Mont-Blanc Express has linked Switzerland and France through spectacular panoramas. With the gradual arrival of these new trainsets, the line continues its modernisation while preserving what makes it so distinctive: an authentic, Alpine and cross-border railway experience.
This step is also part of a joint order with SNCF, which plans to put four additional units into service in September. These new trainsets therefore mark a major advance in the renewal of the Mont-Blanc Express rolling stock.
